PODS: Purpose

The Physical Oceanography Dissertations Symposium (PODS) had its first meeting in June 2002 (Breckenridge, Colorado). By 2016, nine meetings had been conducted, and they are now convened on a biennial basis, with an upcoming meeting in October 2018. This symposium, sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Office of Naval Research (ONR), brings together new doctoral graduates in physical oceanography or the related field of environmental fluid dynamics to create cohort groups of scientists at the start of their professional careers. The symposium fosters interactions between participants, providing a venue for the new PhDs to present their research to each other in a formal setting and including multiple informal opportunities for one-on-one exchange of ideas.

For the last several meetings, DISCO (Dissertations Symposium in Chemical Oceanography) has run concurrently with PODS, with many opportunities for cross-meeting interactions.
